Trolling the internet for some TRIAC info, one link led to this=20
application note by ST dated 2000.

It appears to me that the schematic labels neutral/return with an earth=20
symbol, which seems to me to be misleading to the unwary. The circuit is=20
designed to be at mains potential.

As an aside the schematic layout probably wouldn't meet some Pic listers=20
current or ex drawing ideals.
