I don't know how [society as a whole] can simultaneously complain about the=
 lack of interest in science and technology of our youth, and wish to compl=
etely restrict their access to anything that might be "dangerous."

Divide the class in two, give each side a handful of steppers/etc and a ner=
f gun, and organize a remote-controlled nerf-gun battle!  (what do you thin=
k the ratio of parent comments would be like?)

More politically-correct projects include the egg-bot or a computer-control=
led etch-a-sketch.
On a smaller scale, a "servo motor" based on stepper is probably easier to =
understand than one based on a DC motor, and an interesting bit of infrastr=
ucture.
