They are excellent value for money. Once the generally crappy
battery has died you're left with a torquey little motor and gearbox

I've had two winch projects using old drills. One was a curtain
opener/closer, the other is a work-in-progress, a basic TV lift.
Very simple. Motor, wire, pulleys and guides

I did for a moment think about applying a stepper to the curtain
idea but it hasn't really got the poke. A pulley system as in the
TV lift would be a good (and unconventional these days) way to
add mechanical advantage for experimenters
