I think if it was me, I'd start simple, like attaching a couple of=20
steppers to the knobs on an Etch-a-sketch.
Get it to draw lines.
Get it to draw arcs / circles.
 From there, either go to G-code interpretation or rig up an XY(Z) table.

How far you could get would depend on time, talent, motivation and parts=20
available, but you would start with more or less instant gratification
