When I was quite young I enjoyed heating lead in my mum's aluminium cooking
pots.  I tried to get the lead as hot as possible then pour into the sink
filled with the coldest water.  Lots of steam and noise much to my mum's
concern.

It produced very delicate shiny structures like coral that would collapse
when the water was let out.

I tried to repeat the experiment (this time outside and not using kitchen
pots with goggles and welding gloved) for the benefit of my kids with
varied results.  I think the adult in me would simply not let the lead get
as hot.
