I got a reprieve on PIC development this weekend. For several reasons, I am not yet able to use mplab-x and was writing code for an older PIC. I was using gpsim and running it under Debian squeeze which is the next-to-most recent version of Debian. It seemed to work perfectly except for applying stimuli which didn't appear to work at all. I kept pounding on it, however, because it didn't really seem broken. The compilation and configuration went without a complaint after I got the right libraries on the system. I just could not get the PIC to see the stimulus so I could not debug my program. It turns out that I was misreading the documentation and writing the node commands wrong. I basically stumbled across the error of my ways and now, the stimulus is getting through to the virtual PIC. This lets me see the logic traps I made for myself in the ISR and now, I am just programming and killing virtual bugs of which there were several. I thought I would mention that everything was working because I had earlier said the stimulus emulation was broken. I am thankful for the efforts of those who wrote gpsim as for now, it is the easiest development system for me to get working. Later this Summer, I will have another go at getting X and the gnome screen reader running and give mplab-x another try but right now, it makes as much sense as saying: If my grandmother had a big enough jet pack strapped to her back and was still alive, she could fly from Oklahoma City to London non-stop. As sports-castor Frank Gifford used to say after a potentially spectacular play would fall apart, "If ands and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas."
