=20 BODY { font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px; }At a previous job, we had a "professional agency" involved to carry out some translations for an internal company web application that I had written into Slovakian. Once the app was complete and translated (which was an exciting part of the job once we progressed into Poland, Turkey, Hungary, China, Malaysia, Czech Republic, Thailand) Websites are easy with simplified Chinese text compared to Malaysian which has some very long words (especially for plurals!). As the company expanded into each country, we employed a native speaker from each country to work in the international support team, and this is where the fun started! It had a number of tabs across the top of the page:- "Home", "Customers", "Orders", "Diary", "Tracking", "Admin" One day I was explaining to the Slovakian chap how the application worked when he started to giggle..=20 *Pointing at 'Tracking'* "What does this word mean?" "That is for finding where a customer order is in the system, for example in manufacturing, warehouse, shipping, in-store, or delivered" "Ah, I see, but the word you have here is for chasing small animals through the forest". Whilst the agency had translated correctly, they had taken no account of the context of the words. I wont even get started on the challenges in Thailand with dates!! -Jim Happily working on the smaller domain of embedded systems with no translations required at this point! The explanation does much more justice to your point than the one liner. Alas, you lose the nice impact of a one liner with an explanation :-) Russell --=20 http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist [1] PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist [2] Links: ------ [1] http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist [2] http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist --=20 http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
