I can assure you that it is real. This is the work of my former grad school advisor and his grad students. He was at Cornell in the 2000s - he is at ETH Zurich now. I had the honor of designing the motor controllers and other electronics for his first successful quadrotor. We got it to hover and nothing more. Others took it from there and made incremental improvements - eventually moving to a modified off-the-shelf quadrotor instead of a full custom. It is really awesome to see how far they have taken it!
