That's what I do, a small 12V SLA that can be fitted on a belt
clip. It's a mixed blessing - the drill is lighter without a NiCd
pack and less tiring to use but it does feel unbalanced

As Oscar Wilde would have said - "The only thing worse than
having a rejuvenated cordless drill that's not really cordless as
it has an external battery connected by a cable is NOT having
a rejuvenated cordless drill that's not really cordless as it has an
external battery connected by a cable"
