Samtec has some great parts, and their sample policy is quite generous, but if they aren't stocked at some place like Digi-Key, it seems that the land of small volume somewhat desolate. As I don't intend on producing this for a product (just releasing the schematics/layout/gerbers/source), the samples from Samtec would work great for me, but kind of difficult for anybody else that wants to build their own. The suggestion of "sample them from Samtec" on the BOM I would offer is not really fair to Samtec. The DigiKey option below looks to be a good bet, But those long pin headers have to be available somewhere! I posted something to the Chipkit forum- maybe they will share who their supplier is. Fall back plan is to desolder the header from the RPi and solder the socket on the bottom- then it will mate on my board, as my board doesn't have any really tall parts.
