I don't understand the rates either and Microchip must be one of these=20 companies that has a special rate. Whenever I order samples off their=20 site they send them to me fedex from Thailand ! I live on the east coast=20 of the USA and how they can even afford to ship free samples to me from=20 Thailand I don't know. The other discussion about why things are not made in the USA the answer=20 is, it is all about greed. It isn't the USA consumer that is behind=20 this, but the corporations. Corporations can afford to make the products=20 in the USA, but they are not willing to because the cost is lower in=20 other countries and to them that translates to profit, they don't care=20 who it hurts as long as they benefit. In the USA there is a TV show called Shark Tank. The show is hosted by=20 several millionaires and small businesses present their products or=20 services and try to get the host to invest money. Time and again I have=20 seen people present products that they make in the USA and be told by=20 one of the host that 'couldn't you get that made cheaper somewhere else=20 ?' . There was even a guy that said he was making them in his home town=20 to create local jobs and refused the host offer because they wanted to=20 invest but only if the guy would take the manufacturing over seas. I was=20 proud to see the guy refuse the host that was only concerned about=20 profits, he didn't care if it put people out of work.
