You do need to establish the working voltage range too. An AA
is generally considered flat at around 1V but you may find yours
are inadequate for this circuit quite a bit higher than that, yet still
be perfectly OK for something else that is less demanding with a
wider B+ range

You might find a 5V supply is OK, perhaps with a Schottky diode
(eg 1N5818) in series to reduce it down to 4.7 - 4.8V, which would
put it in the ballpark of a set of 3 "good" batteries
