Yes, it did take awhile.

Once ANSEL was correctly set, then the SFR and Watch windows in MPLAB
reflected the actual state of the pin.

ANSEL was incorrectly set for all pins RA7-RA4, but it was only RA5
that produced a conflict.  That is after the pin was set high and
measured 5V the debugger continued to report it as  0.
