I thought cutting and pasting this  "Programming Target (3/01/2013
4:40:25 PM)PIC16F887 found (Rev 0x2)" from the output window in MPLAB
would leave no doubt.

The target chip is on the Pickit2 44-Pin Demo Board.

I do feel a bit silly, and will try use more care from now on.
