I am now doubting myself and expect I am missing something that is
glaringly obvious but

I am reading this manual "PIC16F882/883/884/886/887Data Sheet"

The manual clearly refers to ANSEL

FIGURE 2-6: PIC16F886/PIC16F887 SPECIAL FUNCTION REGISTERS

Mentions "ANSEL 188h" and "ANSELH 189h" and "ADCON0 1Fh" and "ADCON1 9Fh"

So I understand in summary that  ANSEL and ANSELH determine if the
corresponding pin is analog and ADCON0 CHS3-0 determine which pin is
*connected* for conversion purposes.

What have I missed.
