When I entered college in the late 80's the university still had some
old mainframes and they still used tape decks.
The tape was kept with a lot of slack on both sides of the read/write
head (making deep "U" shapes ), kept taut by vacuum and optical sensors
controlled the reel motors to keep the correct depth of the "U"s.
