There are a few engine controller reference designs around that are essenti= ally the starting point for most of the automotive companies ECU's The current ECU's are using the crank (typically 36-1 or 60-2) or cam timing wheels to provide a reference to a software angle counter that resolves the rotation into 7200 or 72000 counts per 720 degree engine cycle. Everything then is triggered on this count. It is from this count that RPM information can be calculated. One thing is the accelerations on the crank are significant.
