http://www.master.com offers a free service that will poll a server now and then and send you an email if it does not respond. It also gives a graph of response time over time. Other services include a site search engine, web forum, news, etc. Not quite the same as a server based monitor, but it DOES let you know when the system is down. Years ago I installed a script that watches the load on the server (I'd have to search a bit to find it). At that time I was having trouble with Apache now and then running the CPU load to 50 or above. The system pretty much became unresponsive. I added that script to send me an email once the CPU load got to one level, then restart Apache if it got above another level. Of course, once I installed the script (several years ago), the problem pretty much went away. It MIGHT have been a DOS attack. I've also got sshblack running to block IP addresses that fail ssh login, fail http authentication, attempt to spam the wiki (the spammers tend to use the same URL to spam), or attempt to run MSWORD (on the linux server!). There are now several thousand IP addresses blocked, and I have not had a problem with excessive CPU load. Anyway, master.com might be worth a look.
