A linear sensor from an old printer port connect scanner? Most of these mac=
hines have minimal electronics in the scanner, and use smarts in the host m=
achine.

If the idea sounds good, I would use an old XP machine with a printer port =
and logic analyzer to look at the signals and see how they clock the data o=
ut of the sensor.
