Especially when it comes to dealing with Academic institutions (i.e. .ac.uk= email addresses) Farnell and Rapid will both give hefty discounts with pro= perly set up contracts, and Farnell allow you to order one SMD resistor wit= hout P&P charges under such a contract (don't know about Rapid).
