That is correct... better to employ a small FET with an an ultra low RDS
and switch it positvely... more accuracy and avoid exceeding absolute
maximum ratings on pin specifications.... though PIC's are well clamped and
can tolerate a lot of abuse.

Still, beautiful dedicated supervision circuits have been developed to
handle this exact requirement...depends upon what level of performance is
required and how this relates to cost if this is relevant.
