You'll want to sample the battery voltage rather than having a load attached to it continuously. You turn on the battery voltage load, sample the battery voltage then turn the load off. The average current is then a function of how often you sample the battery voltage and for how long. It will cost you one pin of the PIC as an output to control the load. Using this technique you can get the average battery current during voltage readings to be well under a uA. See attached circuit for how I did it in a recent project. Q3 is a NPN transistor with integrated base and BE resistors. Q4 is a logic level P- Channel Mosfet, almost any with a reasonable Rds(on) will work (we happen to use a lot of the part shown so it's cheap). You didn't say what voltage Vdd is for your PIC. If it's 5V then the values of R11 and R12 will be fine. If you are using a lower voltage like 3.3V then you'll have to adjust the resistor values to give a maximum battery voltage <=3D your VDD voltage= .. The second consideration is how accurate do you want your battery voltage reading to be? The MCP1702 is fairly stable and makes an OK voltage reference if you are using VDD as your +Vref for the ADC. If you want improved accuracy you can calibrate the battery voltage with a known voltage and save the calibration value in the on-board EEPROM. Hope that helps!
