555 and his twin brother 556 was one of the most interesting IC's at the border between analog and digital world. I remember my first capacity meter, build with 555 in 1981 (or 82?) (adapter to an already made frequency meter). In the east of the Europe, in those days it was very hard to find the 555, I found it in one store at Budapest.
