I'll second the linode recommendation. The control panel works very
well, and they have a lot of graphing and monitoring services. You
have your choice of a bunch of Linux distros - I use Gentoo. If you're
comfortable setting up your own Linux box, you can't beat a VPS for
the flexibility it gives you. Install the database you want, use the
http server you want, use a custom/bleeding edge php version /
extensions.
