Hello, I have an LCD unit which has been permanently (enough) attached
to an enclosure. The Back light assembly has been contaminated with
polish from an attempt to remove scratches from the case.

Would/Could submerging the display in tap water cause any corrosion or
other possible damage to the display ? Would the use of solvents such
as dish soap be recommended ? (I'd have to imagine not)

note, the display is a standard HD44780 based character LCD
