My father had an old Renault (circa 1970's)  that had an electronic=20
solenoid that manipulated a robotic arm to change gear. Renault called it=20
an automatic - it had a push button control panel on the dashboard. All the=
=20
gears could be selected manually or the auto button pushed and it would=20
change the gears by itself. The car had no clutch pedal.

I assume another solenoid arm depressed the clutch plate when required.
