While it isn't a slam dunk (due to gear ratio differences manus are better in some cars, autos in others) buying a manual strictly because it's better on gas is no longer a valid idea. That said, there are other benefits of manus. The cars tend to be cheaper (autos are usually a "feature" add on), manus are usually MUCH less trouble prone (although autos have gotten REALLY good), and they are plainly more fun to drive IMHO.
