When my daughter was an impecunious medical student studying in Australia (one country across) she looked at buying a low cost car. I waxed eloquent re the virtues of a stick shift but my wife (a competent column and stick shift driver) convinced her that nowadays most people prefer autos instead. Then somebody *gave* her a car. It lasted out her time as a student. It was manual :-).
