Another that may fail on price is Linear Technology (people seem to say the=
ir chips aren't the cheapest, but I haven't used them commercially so could=
n't comment on that). They do have a pretty useful web page selector, and s=
ome of the chips have internal synchronous rectifier FETs to improve effici=
ency. A handful of the chips need very few external components.

Also have you checked the microchip range? I haven't checked recently, but =
