You can do something similar to this: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=3D140598887420 Easy, fast and cheap. You will have to design your own board, due to special power pins allocation. If you never work with smd, ssop can look difficult, but it's not so. Of course, soic is easier, but ssop feets perfect and is affordable enough to be hand soldered. Qfn and others are much more difficult to be hand soldered. Only need to add programming pins for icsp and you have a direct replacement board.
