Have you considered using heat shrink tubing in place of the rubber boot ?
There a couple manufacturers that make waterproof heat shrink tubing, I=20
use it for electronics that go inside aquariuns.
It has an adhesive glue, similar to hot melt glue sticks that seals the=20
connection tight.
