If you leave the diode out of some arrays, it only gets truly dark when the battery discharges.:-) Somewhere, I read an account of a PV pannel at some experimental site that exhibited LED properties when the batteries tried to discharge back through the Solar cells. It was reported that the cells gave off an eerie blueish-purple glow.
