I certainly agree with the "borderline art territory" effect. I wonder if a MOSFET with a low-leakage cap on the gate would hold a charge long enough (for some values of "long enough"; I'm thinking hours or days) to be usefully considered as "memory". Add a refresh circuit to make it "somewhat permanent". Your agreeing to maybe use core makes it hard to tell just what you want to model. I guess anything that's nonvolatile.
