One application I have is the detection of just the first of a series
of pulses in a burst. Once the first has been recognised there's no
need to act on the following 50 or so. After a time-out interrupts
are re-enabled for the next burst

There are so many possibilities I think it's enough to say that if the
programmer knows what they're doing, the consequences of getting
it wrong and it doesn't harm the chip then it's OK, but perhaps not
too elegant
