I agree that was  a significant part of the original problem, but I am
largely concerned with the evaluation of

       6 / 2 *( 1 + 2 )

which the very large majority of posters so far seem to suggest =3D "1"
, both when using  various languages and calculators.
And opinion seems generally to have been that =3D "9" is an error.
Which it isn't.

I'm glad you say "of course" and I'm intrigued that the iPhone gets it
right when so many other systems seem to get it wrong.

So far nobody seems to want to either support or resile from the =3D "1"
answer as correct, after I said it wasn't.
Which seems strange
