It's worse than just noise problems, the transformers also ensure that=20
the common mode voltages are right and provide a path for any DC bias=20
currents. The transformers are also usually center tapped which in turn=20
means the pinout will almost certainly be different from a regular jack.

Bottom line is without the correct magnetics the ethernet link almost=20
certainly won't work at all.

You could probablly run a short cable to a seperate board with the=20
magnetics on if you wanted.
