MPLAB X is a modern IDE - is has many features previous MPLAB did not have
- from a software developer point of view it is much more productive to
work with -- from source structure browsing through change tracking to code
templates and auto complete there are many many new and exciting features.

However, you may find it more difficult to use at the first glance and
maybe a bit slowish on an old computer, and of course you have to fully
test it for your needs before you switch to it. For example I failed to
find the logic analyser in the MPSIM which was a great tool in earlier
MPLABs.
