Many years ago in Asia I lived for an extended period with a
gas on-demand water heater. Made in France, AIR. It worked
fine; consumed the contents of a ~20-lb propane bottle every
2-4 weeks, with help from a gas stove.

It had a pilot light which I lit before using the shower - Otherwise
off.
