I have a couple of Wahl cordless soldering guns with very small tips on them which each use 2 2.5-volt re chargeable cells. I ten to not use them for very long periods of time and then discover after a couple of years that the cells will no longer charge and must be replaced which is a mechanical nuisance, getting everything back so you can close the case once again. The two cells are roughly C-sized nicads. This made me wonder if a couple of ultracaps might be a reasonable replacement. They might survive periods of disuse better. It would probably also be necessary to modify the charging circuit so the voltage would stay at 5 volts across the pair when fully charged since these aren't nicads.
