Hi Nathan, The use of the PLL, is to improve problems wit noise and cross talking, having such a large speed clock running around your board without causing problems is not easy. The PLL allows the device to run at high speed, but that high speed clock is only used internally by the the device in a way that it as been optimized by the manufacturer.
