I see it differently (black for active confused me momentarily), for AC the=

positive half of the wave form causes a positve rectified half wave which=20
switches the coil to the On position and a negative going half wave=20
rectification causes it to move to the OFF position.

For DC a positive pulse switches on, and a negative going pulse switches=20
off. Or indeed just swap the terminals around.
