Before that the user experience was generally sluggish on both Linux and Windows. As a real performance I know that GNU C compiler can use more than one cpu at a time increasing compilation time, and also many video rendering software can use all the silicon. In further more if you use virtualized hardware (aka VmWare or VirtualBox), then generally speaking the more core the better.
