I have never tried one of those gadgets (they've been around for a long time), but I can't imagine it would give that kind of subtle control. >Or is that the width of solder most people are using? I use mostly 0.8mm and that is very thick compared to what most people use. I like it because I have the motor skills to manage it, even with fairly fine SMT, and don't have to hand feed miles of the stuff even when the pads are relatively large.
