Programmers come into two basic categories. Dumb programmers that just=20
consist of a non-programmed components and intelligent programmers that=20
have a microcontroller in the programmer to handle the programming process.

The trouble for a newcomer these days is that dumb programmer designs=20
often rely on legacy ports (e.g. serial and paralell) that either don't=20
exist or aren't correctly implemented on many modern systems and=20
intelligent programmers often run into the catch 22 situation of how do=20
you program the microcontroller in the programmer.

There are many designs but we really need to know which pic families you=20
will be working with and what ports your computer has first.
