All of this is done transparently to the user. If the drive runs out of spare sectors, it will report the error to the controller. At that point, the drive is on it's way to complete failure, and should be replaced as soon as possible. Trying to keep a drive that's reporting bad sectors going is a completely waste of time, I replace them and toss immediately.
