You're right, the MPLAB-X example is too trivial to be useful, but some of the examples in the App Libraries are exactly the opposite. The Graphics samples in particular tend to be loaded up with so many #ifdefs to choose between different development boards and different displays that it is hard to tell what they are doing. The old Explorer 16 Graphics examples were pretty good, but I don't know if they are still on the website.
