Hi John, I have both Oracle (formerly Sun) Virtualbox and VMWare Player installed on my computer. Both are free to use. I think VirtualBox might have the "beginner" edge, but Player has been a little more useful to me, especially when installing older software and dos-based operating systems. I couldn't get VirtualBox to do fullscreen video in full resolution running a Windows 98 machine in my widescreen Win64 laptop. But Player had no problem with it. And parallel ports are not really supported in VirtualBox (as far as I could tell, I got a lot of crashes and use Player when I need a parallel port). VMWare Player also has market share going for it. And if you get serious later, VMWare Workstation has a few more options and features. I have a license for an old Workstation version so I don't use it anymore, but it was very nice.
