I think the target market was more for Collage/University labs which would already be equipped with Bench power supply's. If your friend is serious about learning and experimenting in electronics he will need a Bench Supply sooner rather than later anyway, so It may be a good idea to budget for one early and just run the board off 2 9V battery's until then.
