I haven't done it as a hobbyist, but I have had cable companies make proto runs of custom molded cables for me in my day job. It is quite possible that you may be able to have it done for around the same price as higher-end PCBs. In my case, they did it free because we were considering purchasing thousands. In the end, their minimum order quantity and price point didn't make sense but I still have the samples.
