One reason is the platform was aimed at people who wouldn't necessarily pla=
y with microcontrollers. Artists, musicians, etc.:

- simple boards with sockets for plugging parts directly into or for expans=
ion "shields"
- very simple IDE/compiler

There's a great documentary on Vimeo about the roots. I'll see if I can fin=
